In the world of interior design, creativity often intertwines with resilience. Pelar, a graduate of the Heritage School of Interior Design Virtual Masters Certification program, embodies this powerful combination. Her journey from a successful realtor to a blossoming interior designer is a testament to her unwavering spirit and faith, navigating personal trials and professional triumphs with grace and determination.
Initially working as a realtor, Pelar found herself naturally gravitating towards helping her clients design their homes and became inclined to reap the benefits of her design efforts. Driven by a passion for interior design, Pelar decided to formalize her skills and enrolled at the Heritage School of Interior Design. Little did she know, her life was about to take an unexpected turn that would test her resilience like never before.
Shortly after her graduation, Pelar began experiencing alarming symptoms: extreme fatigue, migraines, and an inability to stand for more than a minute. Her face and neck showed substantial swelling, and one day, she was so swollen that she couldn’t open her eyes. Alarmed, her mother insisted she go to the hospital. There, after numerous tests, Pelar received a devastating diagnosis: Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a blood cancer, and a tumor about the size of a fist on her lungs making it difficult to breathe.
Despite the shock, Pelar embraced her belief in manifesting positive outcomes. With a family history of illness, she had always feared she might face a significant health challenge. She immediately embarked on an aggressive treatment plan, including chemotherapy, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments such as eliminating alcohol and meat. The treatment was grueling, and she faced the emotional challenge of losing her beautiful black hair, a significant part of her identity. In an empowering move, she chose to shave her head, symbolizing her embrace of the journey ahead.
“Go with your gut, and allow it to guide you,” Pelar advises. Throughout her treatment, she remained mindful of everything she consumed, from food to stress, understanding the profound impact it had on her health. June marks a significant milestone—Pelar celebrates one year of her cancer diagnosis and her journey to recovery. She attributes much of her healing to her supportive mother, family and a few close friends who stood by her side and helped her navigate through the toughest times.
In a touching moment during our interview, Pelar was driving her daughter to the airport, highlighting the close bond they share. Before her illness, life was a fast-paced whirlwind, but now, Pelar takes time to meditate, breathe, and truly listen to her body. Her daughter’s strength and support were pivotal during her recovery.
Faith has been a cornerstone of Pelar’s journey. With a strong connection to God and the power of prayer, she has navigated her path with gratitude. This faith extended into her professional life as well. In a serendipitous meeting with a friend over lunch, Pelar shared her recent graduation and her desire to start her own design business. This conversation led to an unimaginable opportunity that birthed the emergence of 37th Burleigh Interior Design, an ode to Pelar’s sweet memories of her childhood home located on 37th and Burleigh street in Milwaukee, WI.
Pelar’s design firm has flourished rapidly. Within a short period, she has already hired an assistant and continues to grow her business. “God is the Way maker,” she says, expressing daily gratitude for the second chance at life and the opportunities that have come her way.
Pelar’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength that lies within us all. Her journey from realtor to interior designer, while battling and overcoming cancer, is a testament to her resilience, faith, and the transformative power of following one’s passion. As she continues to inspire others, Pelar’s legacy will undoubtedly be one of courage, creativity, and unwavering faith.
