Meet R. Coyote, a true champion for our students and school. She’s not just a mentor; she’s an advocate who inspires us all. She has been an incredible community supporter of Heritage School of Interior Design students over the years as well as the wider Portland Interior Design community. Stephanie interviewed her while touring Urbanite PDX, her unique and groundbreaking venture.
Stephanie’s Visit to Urbanite PDX
In the heart of SE Portland, Oregon, nestled among the vibrant streets of the eclectic Design District, lies Urbanite PDX, a haven for creativity and entrepreneurship. Founded nearly a decade ago, Urbanite PDX is not just a showroom; it’s a lifestyle destination, showcasing over 75 innovative brands, of whom 40 are BIPOC women-owned businesses, and providing a platform for small businesses to thrive. I recently had the privilege of sitting down with the founder and dynamic force behind Urbanite PDX, to delve into her journey, her vision, and her advice for aspiring CEOs and leaders.
The owner’s passion for fostering creativity and community is palpable as she describes her mission for Urbanite PDX. “I wanted to create something that hadn’t really been done, a place where makers and creators could elevate their craft and be accessible to everyone,” she explains. “I envisioned a hub where people could find local ‘everything’ – from handmade clothing, furniture & jewelry, to fine art, plants, & instruments, to locally created & published, books, games, salts & snacks. Throw in community events, music & markets with an emphasis on INclusion in everything we do. That was my goal.”
Urbanite PDX
Walking through the expansive showrooms of Urbanite PDX, it’s evident that her vision has become a reality. Each corner is richly layered with unique and one-of-a-kind products, curated with care and attention to detail. But what truly sets Urbanite PDX apart is the founder’s dedication to supporting her showrooms and creatives. “I run the framework end of the businesses, the ‘un-fun’ stuff that often slows creatives down.” she explains, “so our inventive visionaries can focus on what they do best – creating.”
As we stroll through the showrooms, one of the business owners expresses heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities Urbanite PDX has provided. “What would we do if she didn’t create Urbanite?” she muses, a sentiment echoed by many who call Urbanite PDX home. With over 25,000 square feet of elegant industrial space, 10,000 sq ft of rentable photo studios and event space, and a huge fenced lot, Urbanite PDX offers more than just a store, it’s a versatile venue for events, music, markets, film production & community connection. Local filmmakers and production teams frequently turn to Urbanite PDX for its vast collection of props and unique ambiance.
Advice for Designers
When asked about her advice for aspiring CEOs and leaders, her message is clear: “Its old advice, but solid: Do what you’re passionate about. Find what lights your fire every day. Don’t be afraid to pursue it. Phenomenal rewards are out there when you take on challenges you’re passionate about.”
Her own journey with Urbanite PDX is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks. “Believe me, no one said ‘yes, 25,000 sq feet for an untried idea is a good investment’ she laughs. As I leave Urbanite PDX, inspired by her story and the inclusive, elevated, energy of the space, I’m reminded that true success lies not only in achieving our goals but in empowering others to achieve theirs. In the heart of Portland, Urbanite PDX continues to do just that – elevating creativity, gathering community, and envisioning endless sustainable possibilities for small businesses.
This founder’s incredible story is a journey of determination, resilience, and success. She has had a lasting impact on Heritage School of Design students and the Portland Interior Design community. To follow Urbanite PDX check out their Instagram @UrbanitePDX!
